As we journey into Spring, it’s a time for cleansing. Two of my favorites are mint tea and Japanese mustard or mizuna, (Brassica rapa, komatsuna -yellow flowers shown above).  A tasty find in mesclun salad mix mizuna is low in calories, high in cancer prevention ingredients, folic acid, and vitamin A. Sprinkle some nasturtium blossoms for a bit of heat. A hot cup of mint tea can give an extra bonus by helping to release emotional pain. Here are some varieties of mint, mentha:

  • Apple Mint, Mentha suaveolens
  • Chocolate Mint, Mentha pulegium: Good as a ground cover and in hanging baskets
  • Orange Bergamot, Mentha piperita citrate: Citrus-flavored, English-breakfast tea
  • Peppermint, Mentha xpiperita var.: Best for fragrance and flavor
  • Pineapple Mint, Mentha suaveolens var.
  • Spearmint, Mentha spicata: Used to make the classic mint julep
